Obesity, Weight Loss and the Carnivore Diet
Personal stories, not medical advice. If you take medication (especially for blood sugar, blood pressure or mood), change your diet with your doctor in the loop.
What it feels like
You've lost the same 30 pounds more than once. You've counted points, calories and steps, and you've been hungry the whole time, until the weight came back. Every doctor's visit starts with the scale. The people below have lived that, some since childhood.
Real people, real stories (N=1)
- Todd (with Dr. Shawn Baker): Todd describes weighing a couple hundred pounds as a child and a lifelong struggle with weight and yo-yo diets. YouTube
- Todd (with Dr. Shawn Baker): Todd says that after five weeks of strict carnivore his cravings were gone, his anxiety eased and his outlook improved. YouTube
- Dr. Shawn Baker (about Todd): Dr. Shawn Baker narrates that over months Todd slowly regained function, which added up to about 300 lb of weight loss. YouTube
- Carnivore Shug says the first week on carnivore brought a 5-pound loss and a feeling of being amazed at how good it felt. YouTube
- Dr. Paul Saladino says weight loss does happen in a caloric deficit, but that all calories are not created equal and the source matters for health. YouTube

Todd, on Dr. Shawn Baker's channel. REALISTIC Carnivore Weight Loss (Todd's Transformation), at 0:10 He says "I was couple hundred pounds when I was 5 years old," and he'd lost weight on many diets but always gained it back. At 7:52, after five weeks of strict carnivore: "all the cravings were gone… I didn't have any anxiety." At 8:17 Dr. Baker narrates that "over months Todd slowly regained function that added up to about 300 lb weight loss."
Adrian Gledhill, a former Biggest Loser contestant, on Dr. Anthony Chaffee's channel. Watch at 2:13 After applying to the show, she says: "I applied and I can't believe it I got picked." She was sent home early, then went back on the show after losing the most weight at home (2:49). Then, at 29:32, she talks about carnivore: "I started out at 202 pounds, now I've been between 155 and 165… and I've been maintaining it for a year," and adds that "my energy is better."
Carnivore Shug, on Dr. Shawn Baker's channel. Getting Off the Yo-Yo Diet Rollercoaster and losing 150 Pounds, at 2:40 "That first week I lost 5 lbs… I couldn't believe how good I felt." (The 150-pound figure is from the video's title.)
Our thesis
Our thesis: We think obesity is largely a mismatch between modern, ultra-processed, high-carbohydrate food and an appetite system that evolved on whole animal foods. A diet built on fatty meat may restore natural fullness and make fat loss easier for some people, without counting calories. This is understudied for carnivore: we know of no controlled trial of a carnivore diet for weight loss. The research cited here covers ketogenic diets and ultra-processed food, not carnivore.
The bet
- A directional shift. The stories above come from real people, on camera and in their own words. They are anecdotes, but they point the same way, and we think that's worth taking seriously.
- Lower risk with your doctor in the loop. Eating meat, eggs, salt and water for a set trial period is a reversible experiment. Insulin, sulfonylureas, blood pressure meds, GLP-1s and SGLT2 inhibitors may need adjusting, so your prescriber reviews them first. The trial happens with your doctor in the loop, not around them; see the Safety check above for the details.
- Why the research is thin. Randomized trials are built for drugs and are expensive. We think one reason is that no one can patent a steak, so the industry has little incentive to fund primal-diet research. A missing trial isn't proof that it works, and it isn't proof that it doesn't.
- The primal lens. The human body was shaped long before refined sugar, seed oils and ultra-processed food existed. We see the modern diet as the uncontrolled experiment, and a meat-based trial as a step back toward the conditions our biology evolved in.
Overview: the condition, holistically
Obesity is excess body fat that can affect health in many ways. Commonly discussed contributors include genetics, the modern food environment (especially ultra-processed food; see Hall 2019 in Sources), sleep, stress, inactivity and some medications. Standard care includes calorie-reduced diets, exercise, behavioral programs, GLP-1 and other medications, and bariatric surgery.
How carnivore is claimed to help
What advocates say, attributed to them:
- Don't fight hunger. At 0:52 Dr. Ken Berry says that "if you're hungry enough for long enough you're going to eat," so a diet that leaves you hungry fails. At 1:10 he says the answer is food that keeps you "full for longer."
- Eat fat, get thin. At 2:25 Dr. Anthony Chaffee argues that Americans cut fat and got fatter anyway. At 4:15 he says to eat fatty meat "until it stops tasting good," so the body knows it's "not in a famine."
- Not all calories are equal. At 1:00 Dr. Paul Saladino agrees that weight loss happens in a caloric deficit, but argues the source of the calories matters for health.

Questions to ask your doctor
Ask: "Which of my medications need adjusting if I cut carbs and lose weight quickly?" "Which labs should we check, and how often, while I try this?" Not sure your concerns are being heard? See when to question the advice.
Try it
- Go through the Safety check above with your doctor before you start.
- Eat fatty meat, eggs, butter, salt and water until you're satisfied. Don't starve yourself.
- Plan meals and protein targets with the KC Meatup calculator.
- Find KC butchers, steakhouses and clinicians in the directory.
- Track your waist, energy and labs as well as the scale.

Cell Metabolism. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cmet.2019.05.008. In a small inpatient study of 20 adults, people ate more calories and gained weight on an ultra-processed diet compared with an unprocessed one. This doesn't test carnivore, but it supports the case against the modern food environment.

British Journal of Nutrition. https://doi.org/10.1017/S0007114513000548. Across 13 trials with 12 months or more of follow-up, very-low-carb ketogenic diets produced modestly greater weight loss (under 1 kg on average) than low-fat diets. These were ketogenic diets, not carnivore.
