Anxiety, Panic and the Carnivore Diet

Personal stories, not medical advice. If you take medication (especially for blood sugar, blood pressure or mood), change your diet with your doctor in the loop.

What it feels like

Your heart races in the grocery line. You plan routes around places you might panic. You carry a pill "just in case." Some of the people below couldn't drive or be alone; one was diagnosed at 13 and carried Xanax everywhere for years.

If anxiety has been running your life, these stories are worth bringing to your prescriber as a monitored diet trial alongside your care.

Our thesis

Our thesis: Some anxiety is the nervous system reacting to an unstable modern diet (blood sugar swings, stimulants, ultra-processed food) that our biology didn't evolve with, and we think a steady, meat-based diet may calm that signal for some people. This is very understudied: the only paper cited here is a single-patient case report, and We know of no controlled trial of carnivore for anxiety.

The bet

  • A directional shift. The stories above come from real people, on camera and in their own words. They are anecdotes, but they point the same way, and we think that's worth taking seriously.
  • Lower risk with your doctor in the loop. Eating meat, eggs, salt and water for a set trial period is a reversible experiment. Stopping benzodiazepines abruptly can cause seizures, and SSRIs need a slow taper, so any change goes through your prescriber. The trial happens with your doctor in the loop, not around them; see the Safety check above for the details.
  • Why the research is thin. Randomized trials are built for drugs and are expensive. No one can patent a steak, so the industry has little incentive to fund primal-diet research. A missing trial isn't proof that it works, and it isn't proof that it doesn't.
  • The primal lens. The human body was shaped long before refined sugar, seed oils and ultra-processed food existed. We see the modern diet as the uncontrolled experiment, and a meat-based trial as a step back toward the conditions our biology evolved in.

Overview: the condition, holistically

Anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety, panic disorder, phobias, and related conditions such as PTSD) involve an overactive threat response. Contributors include genetics, trauma, chronic stress, poor sleep, caffeine, alcohol and other substances, thyroid problems, and swings in blood sugar. Standard care includes cognitive behavioral therapy, SSRIs and SNRIs, and short-term benzodiazepines. These help many people, and advocates of metabolic psychiatry argue diet deserves a place at the table too.

How carnivore is claimed to help

What advocates say, attributed to them:

  • Steady fuel and no blood sugar swings. Dr. Ken Berry says that in his clinic, patients' anxiety "got worse when they were eating like that," meaning high-carb (1:54). He says a ketogenic diet helps anxiety and depression the most of any diet (0:52).
  • Metabolic and inflammatory roots. Dr. Rachel Brown, a psychiatrist, connects mental health disorders to metabolic dysfunction, insulin resistance and gut health (chapter at 16:23).
  • Brain "voltage." Creator Maurice Daher argues that "anxiety is electrical" (0:08). His case is that a meat-based diet steadies glutamate/GABA balance, taurine, thiamine and blood sugar (2:12). (This is his own explanation, not an established mechanism.)

Questions to ask your doctor

Ask: "Can I try a dietary change while staying on my current medication?" "If I ever want to reduce a benzodiazepine or SSRI, what would a safe taper look like?" Not sure your concerns are being heard? See when to question the advice.

Try it

  • Go through the Safety check above with your doctor before you start.
  • Don't stop your meds on your own, especially benzodiazepines or SSRIs. Any change is a supervised taper with your prescriber.
  • Keep salt and water up during the first few weeks.
  • Plan meals with the KC Meatup calculator.
  • Find KC clinicians and butchers in the directory.
