Learning the Traditions First
Status: Proven. Every tradition on this page has worked for people for generations.
I write a lot on this site about robots and agents. Here's the honest part: I'm new. People around Kansas City have been raising, trading and butchering cattle for longer than any software has existed, and most of what I'm "inventing" is an old idea with a battery added. Before I automate a job, I want to understand why it's done the way it's done.
What I'm learning from
-
The sale barn. Iowa State Extension calls the brick-and-mortar sale barn "the historical norm" for selling calves, and mentions the warm cup of coffee on sale day (Iowa State B2-36). Barns near me:
- Kingsville has been at it for 32 years (Kingsville).
- Fort Scott says it has marketed more than four million cattle since 1994 (Fort Scott).
- Holton is holding a 75th-anniversary sale this December (Holton).
I'll sit in the stands before I ever sell.
-
The local locker.
- Bronson Locker has been family-run since 1966, and the family says it is trying "to keep small-town butchering alive" (Bronson Locker).
- Paradise Locker started in 1946 (Paradise).
- Nadler's calls itself an "Old School" butcher and keeps each customer's cut sheet on file (Nadler's).
These shops are why custom beef is possible for someone like me.
-
The handshake lease. In the Flint Hills, 53.5% of bluestem pasture leases are oral, about 37% have run 20 years or more, and 82.1% of respondents burned their pastures in 2025, mostly in the first half of April (Bluestem Pasture Report 2025). That's trust and land knowledge built over decades.
-
Brands. Kansas has recorded brands since 1939 and still has more than 16,000 registered (Kansas Dept. of Agriculture). A brand is a family's name on the animal.
-
Moving herds with the seasons. Transhumance is old enough to be on UNESCO's list of humanity's cultural heritage (UNESCO). My "open range with agents" idea is a small echo of it.
-
Grazing associations and custom grazing. Neighbors have long shared grass under shared rules (USDA Forest Service). MU Extension notes many stocker operations start as custom grazing on leased land (MU Extension).
-
Fence law. Missouri's division-fence rules include a process where three disinterested neighbors look at a disputed fence for the judge (MU Extension G810). Even the law assumes neighbors settle things together.
My promises
- Listen before I post. When an experienced rancher, auctioneer or butcher tells me I'm wrong, I'll fix the page and credit them if they want the credit.
- No "disruption" talk. Robots on this site are tools for the people already doing the work, not replacements for their judgment.
- Name what I don't know. When I'm not sure, the page says so, and where I have open questions, I list them.
- Ask permission. I won't photograph someone's cattle, barn or plant for this site without asking.
If you've been doing this for decades and want to set me straight, I want to hear it.
